Renaissance and Neo-Renaissance Prague: Architectural Tips from Our Concierge

Prague is a city where centuries of European architecture meet within just a few kilometres. Gothic gives way to Renaissance, Baroque, neo-Renaissance and 20th-century architecture. Thanks to this diversity, a single walk can reveal several different faces of the Czech capital.

This time, we asked our concierge team for tips on places that will guide you primarily through Renaissance and neo-Renaissance Prague while offering an enjoyable itinerary for a late-summer or autumn day.

The Singing Fountain in the Royal Garden

Prague Castle

The Singing Fountain in the garden by Queen Anne’s Summer Palace is often described as the most beautiful Renaissance water feature north of the Alps. Although you will not find a carillon here, the fountain certainly has its own sound: water falling onto a resonating bronze plate creates a gentle rhythmic tone. Also worth noticing in the same garden is Queen Anne’s Summer Palace, one of the purest examples of Italian Renaissance architecture outside Italy. The palace is currently undergoing renovation, however, so we will save a visit for another time.

Concierge tip: A trip to the Royal Garden is worthwhile not only for its beautiful Renaissance features, but during the approaching autumn months also for the journey itself. If you arrive by tram, pause for a moment along the line between the Královský letohrádek and Pražský hrad stops. Trams pass through Václav Havel Alley, a linden-lined avenue that turns colourful in autumn and is an exceptionally photogenic spot near Prague Castle.

Schwarzenberg Palace

Hradčany Square

Just a few steps from Prague Castle stands the striking Schwarzenberg Palace, a Renaissance residence completed in 1567 whose sgraffito façade is one of the unmistakable landmarks of Hradčany Square. Today, the National Gallery Prague presents a collection of Old Masters from the 16th to the 18th centuries here.

Baroque enthusiasts can admire works by Petr Brandl and Karel Škréta, alongside works by other European masters such as Albrecht Dürer, El Greco, Rembrandt and Lucas Cranach. This single tip combines an exceptional Renaissance building with art spanning several other centuries.

Art Palace Prague – Neo-Renaissance Filled with Art

Na Příkopě 858/20

On your way back to the city centre, stop by Art Palace Prague. This newly opened gallery is housed in the historic former Živnostenská banka building dating from the late 19th century. The impressive neo-Renaissance building is an architectural experience in its own right, and its rich decoration was created with the involvement of prominent Czech artists. Its location on Na Příkopě also makes it an easy addition to an afternoon walk through central Prague.
